ABOUT ARTIST

My name is Rosanna McDonnell; locals sometimes identify me as "Stained Glass Rose”.
I live in British Columbia, Canada.
I am an artist and my main focus is in glass. I have always been artistic, but never applied my art until a friend prompted me to take time away from motherhood and focus on developing my creative energies. I never looked back. I've been working with stained glass for several years.
My medium is not as pliable as clay or as forgiving as pastels. I work with glass, but not just any glass. I choose glass that moves, has texture and fluidity.
Glass alone is art. The canvas may be brittle and at times fussy, but etching characters into glass has its own rewards. A finished piece of stained glass art is essentially two finished pieces, as they show a different illumination in different light, daylight and at night.
Seen through natural light it's one piece, and at night it's completely different.
I have graduated from making small pieces in pattern books, to large picture windows of my own design. The more I do the bigger they seem to get. Drawing and creating the work is as satisfying as picking the glass and filling the shapes in with color and texture. Like any artist, I get a thrill when I sell a piece, but after selling one of my first major works - one in a series of angel sisters – I was saddened when it sold. They're a part of me. They'll always be a part of me.

Right now I am working on sketching and putting a pattern book together of some of my favorite pieces that I have created and other drawings that I’d like to see come to life. I have dreams about what my next piece will be. There will never be enough time to create all the images and ideas that roll about in my mind.
